LOU REED AND DOUG YULE ON AN ISLAND?

At least on the new Coney Island Baby 30th anniversary reissue of the 1976 album, Lou Reed and Doug Yule's unknown collaboration will finally be made public on Aug 15. Coney Island Baby saved Lou Reed financially as it was rushed out after his ambitious instrumental album, Metal Machine Music failed.

"Metal Machine Music had an unusually high number of returns and was taken off the market in three weeks," Reed writes in the new liner notes. "I had no money and no guitars. The roadies had taken them when they hadn't been paid. I was in debt to everyone including the musicians union. RCA put me up in a hotel while the future fell, to be decided."

In his lonely room, Reed conceived Coney Island Baby which will now be expanded to include the B-side "Nowhere at All". Also included are "Downtown Dirt" and "Leave Me Alone", first released on the 1992 Reed boxed set "Between Thought and Expression." Of most interest to devotees will be versions of "Crazy Feeling," "She's My Best Friend" and "Coney Island Baby" recorded with Reed's former Velvet Underground colleague Doug Yule in January 1975 during rehearsals for "Coney Island Baby." These tracks have never been previously released.

DON'T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN

A new compilation that pays tribute to Kris Kristsofferson's songwriting powers, Don't Let The Bastards Get You Down: A Tribute To Kris Kristofferson, is due Aug 7. It includes versions of Kris' best known songs 'Me And Bobby McGhee', 'Sunday Morning Coming Down' and 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' and features Tom Verlaine (Television), Chuck Prophet (Green On Red), John Doe (of X), Oranger, Jon Langford (Mekons) & Chip Taylor, Hannah Marcus & Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters), Eric Ambel (Steve Earle), John B.Strom (Blake Babies) and many others". Kristofferson turned 70 on June 22.

RAINBOW ROCKS

A series of three double CDs collecting concerts Rainbow performed in 1976 is ready to roll. The first due July 10, is Live Cologne Sporthalle and is the complete show. The three featured shows are from Koln, Dusseldorf and Mannheim. The series is to celebrate the heavy metal band's 30th anniversary. The discs are newly mixed from long lost multi-track recordings made on the famous Rolling Stones Mobile. Ritchie Blackmore was the band's founder and guitarist.

METALLICA'S 20th ANNIVERSARY MASTER OF PUPPETS SHOW

Apocalypse Sound will release on July 3, a DVD of Metallica's "20 Years From Puppets" broadcast on MTV's Rock AM Ring program. This show was offered as a bittorrent download about two weeks ago and it was sourced from the superior German satellite broadcast. The MTV broadcast is not as good. The show was live at Nurburgring, Germany, June 3, 2006. A fantastic show. It is unclear which source Apocalypse Sound's DVD is from.

THE BIGGEST BANG IS YET TO COME

For those Rolling Stones collectors who are totally confused about all the Japanese performance titles and didn't act right away Dog N Cat Records will issue "The Bigger Bang" Box Set featuring all the shows from Japan Late-March/Early-April. With one exception, all these are sourced from ALD, a soundboard source but missing the bass and some backing vocals. The mix in this type of source puts the vocals front and centre.

THE LOST TRAFFIC ALBUM

Gordon Jackson' Thinking Back album might as well be a Traffic album. The 1969 LP was produced by Dave Mason and featured players like Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Mason himself, all Traffic men. Also appearing are Jim King and Ric Grech, Julie Driscoll, the Blossom Toes, Meic Stevens, Reg King and many others. The music is similar in style to Traffic's featuring folk, pop and psychedelia. Now finally, a CD of this album is to be issued, taken directly from the quarter inch analog tapes with bonus tracks. A newly pressed vinyl edition is already out in England.

THE KEITH TIPPETT GROUP

This 1970 album, You Are Here... I Am There by the Keith Tippett Group is a rare British jazz album that was only issued in the UK. Now the Akarma label out of Italy [?] is reissuing it on vinyl. The players include many from the avant garde side of British blues rock including Elton Dean on alto sax, Jeff Clyne on bass, Marc Charig on cornet and flicorn Nick Evans on trombone and Alan Jackson (formerly of the Mike Westbrook Orchestra) on drums. Tippett himself was formerly a guest pianist on King Crimson's first album. Due July 3.

A RICKIE LEE JONES' SOUNDTRACK

Friends With Money which made its debut at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, has a soundtrack heavily informed with Rickie Lee Jones' new songs plus others by Neil Halstead, The Weepies, Big Red Button and a beautiful score by Craig Richey. These are the first new songs since Jones' broadside at George W Bush on her 2003 release, Evening Of My Best Day. Due July 10.

ELVIS IN VEGAS

Scheduled for an early-July release from S&R Records is Elvis Presley's The Sound Of Vegas Vol. 1, featuring a previously unreleased audience tape from the Dinner Show on August 8, 1973.

40 YEARS OF PET SOUNDS AND GOOD VIBRATIONS

For its 40th anniversary, both Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations will be reissued in collector editions on Aug 29 and June 27 respectively. Good Vibrations features five versions of the 1966 smash hit and its original U.S. B-Side, "Let's Go Away For Awhile.". Pet Sounds will have a deluxe CD/DVD package with Mono, Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound Mixes, and rare promotional and documentary footage. A double coloured limited edition vinyl (of 10,000 copies) will also be available.

Pet Sounds will have a bonus mono track, "Hang On To Your Ego" (an early version of the album's "I Know There's An Answer"). The DVD's six film and video cuts include a behind-the-scenes documentary, "The Making Of Pet Sounds;" "Pet Stories," featuring interviews with Brian Wilson, lyricist Tony Asher and members of the original "wrecking crew" Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, Don Randi, Frankie Capp and Tommy Morgan; the never-before-released 1966 promotional colour 'firehouse' film clip for "Good Vibrations;" original 1966 promotional black & white film clips for "Sloop John B" and Pet Sounds, and an excerpt from the unreleased BBC television documentary, "Rhythm of Life," in which Sir George Martin joins Brian Wilson in the studio for a discussion of the album's musical significance.

Fans are however sceptical of the "exclusive" material. They compare the CD/DVD "Pet Sounds" package to the standard 2001 CD in a box with a slightly altered version of the 2003 DVD-Audio disc. Moreover, they suspect that the original "Pet Sounds" promo film and the "Sloop John B" promo film were on the DVD-A. Since the DVD-A also had the 1996 "Pet Sounds Sessions" EPK on it, they wonder if this is being repeated on the new DVD. However, while the "Good Vibrations" promo film is new to DVD, it is common fare among collectors and was even aired a number of times only a few years ago on the AMC channel.

Also, while "Pet Stories" is presumably new to DVD, they question if footage from the Brian Wilson "Pet Sounds Live" DVD is being reused for this. Hence the only apparent new material here is the "Rhythm of Life" excerpt, the "GV" promo film, and maybe one or both of the mini-documentaries.

THE LOST NAZZ MONSTER

Todd Rundgren's Nazz album that never got released is finally about to be. Castle Music will release the 2CD Nazz 2: The Fungo Bat Sessions very soon. Allmusic.com had this to say about the lost album: "[Nazz] began work on an ambitious self-produced double-album named Fungo Bat. By the time it was released in April 1969, it was trimmed to a single album, Nazz Nazz. Although the project's scale was diminished, the music remained dizzyingly diverse, as the record ran the gamut from psychedelic rockers to pop ballads. One problem emerged, however. In the process of editing, much of Rundgren's newer, Laura Nyro-influenced material - which he had sung himself - was left on the shelves."

THE LAST BLUE AFTERNOON

LOST JAPANESE ROCK ALBUM

Satori, which was released in 1971 by Flower Travellin' Band, is a conceptual hard rock-psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass and Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. A 1000-only Limited Edition 180 Gram Vinyl is due soon.

Accompanied by Danny Thompson (Pentangle) and Brian Willoughby (later of The Strawbs), as well as her then husband Tony Visconti and the Pop Arts String Quartet, this is an intimate concert which captures Mary at her best.

CANADIAN STUDENTS VOICE OUT AGAINST COPYRIGHT LAWS

The Canadians continue to show their ability to have a reasonable and civil public discourse on issues of copyright. First, the Canadian Music Creators Coalition, representing a number of Canadian musicians, came out against the recording industry suing their fans. On May 25, a group representing 500,000 Canadian students sent a letter to the Canadian government about digital rights management, copyright police and onerous punishments on libraries, schools and students.

At issue are the damages that copyright holders can claim on anyone who infringes copyright. They said: "We are writing to urge the Canadian government to reject proposals for restrictive copyright laws, and to instead embrace policies that will support Canada's vibrant and open knowledge community." In $ingapore, two young adults were sent to jail for sharing MP3 files.

They pointed out the insanity that is statutory damages: "Statutory damages have no place in license bargaining between collectives and Canada's public institutions. Statutory damages are an effective tool to address enforcement of IP rights in commercial piracy cases." The students said educational institutions, libraries and archives "are not commercial pirates" and should not suffer the threat of statutory damages. The students are concerned that the major publishing and recording industries - motivated by profit - have been wielding too much influence, thereby "drowning the legitimate concerns of teachers, researchers, librarians, and students."

WARNER BROS TO GO BITTORRENT

The bittorrrent software maker has signed on with Warner Bros to distribute Warner's content on the net. BitTorrent's technology is similar to that of peer to peer file sharing but unlike programs that are used to sharing music BitTorrent is made for easy downloading of large files such as television shows or movies. Starting this summer customers will be able to download movies and television shows from the Warner Bros catalogue. Unfortunately, though you will be able to burn the downloadable movies onto DVD they will not play on a DVD player - only your computer.

TV shows are expected to cost $1 an episode while movies will cost about the price of a DVD.

As BitTorrent works best when there are a lot of users downloading a particular show at the same time, we are not sure how this will work in a business model where users trickle in at irregular intervals for less popular shows. It might take a customer days to get an odd show.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OWNERS OUT TO CLOSE ALLOFMP3

As reported earlier, the Russian site AllofMP3.com is fast becoming a firm favorite among music fans for its efficient service and low, low prices for downloads. It is already No. 2 in the UK after iTunes. But now the International Intellectual Property Alliance, an umbrella organization that includes the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America and the Business Software Alliance, are flexing their muscles to close the site.

"We want Russia in the WTO [World Trade Organisation], but they must first abide by the rules and obligations," said Eric Schwartz, vice president of the group. The G8 Summit is scheduled in Moscow in June and lobbying has begun to accuse AllofMP3.com as a pirate site. Actually the site follows Russian laws where it is legal. But the U.S. Trade Representative's office has called AllofMP3.com the world's largest server-based pirate Web site.

SUPER QUICK FROM TORRENT TO BOOT

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED A LAWSUIT?

"Experience Hendrix", the Hendrix Estate company has just shuttered another two labels based in the UK that sold Hendrix recordings without permission. The company set up by Jimi Hendrix's step-sister seems to have learnt from the entertainment giant that has a rat for a mascot to protect their "reputation" at all cost. To the extent that there is hardly anything new from the official record label. The last release was the mail-order only audience recording "Live At The Isle Of Fehmarn".

If the point the Hendrix estate wants to make is that they are the sole owners of any and all Hendrix recordings, then why hoard? If it is that these unauthorised releases tarnish the legend's reputation by their poor quality, then why release something like "Fehmarn"?

VINYL DREAMS

"Damn! The funkiest woman of all time (no arguments) immortalised on a superb double heavy vinyl set, Betty Davis' This Is It [double LP], featuring all her best moments. Great sleevenotes and photos complete the picture" Released May 15. And on May 30, Neil Young's 'Living With War' (200 Gram Vinyl) is an exclusive limited edition of Neil's new album available on Quiet Vinyl.

ETHIOPIAN JAZZ FOR COLLECTORS

Three Ethiopian Jazz Vinyl titles arrive May 15. Ahmed Mahmoud's 'Ere Mela Mela' a very tasty 1975 album by the Ethiopian jazzman who, together with Mulatu Astatke dominated the Ethio jazz scene in the 1970's.

Mulatu Astake's 'Ethio Jazz' is an amazing orchestral 'Ethio-groove', filled with soul, jazz, some Latin, & the deepest eastern rhythms. This early '70s outing has become recognised as one of the key Ethiopean albums. Finally, 'Ethiopian Modern Instrumental Hits' is more essential Ethiopean grooves featuring more Mulatu tracks from 1969 & 1972 and offering several other artists. Ethiopia, where the lion sleeps tonight and jazz is wide awake.

U.S. RECORD LABELS TARGET 12 CITIES FOR CD, DVD PIRATES

The music industry has announced May 3, a new campaign to clear the streets of pirates who sell illegal CDs and DVDs. They have identified 12 U.S. cities where they say have suffered a significant drop in music and DVD sales possibly caused by the availability of pirated discs.

The 12 are Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Chicago; Dallas; Houston; Los Angeles; Miami; New York; Philadelphia; Providence, R.I.; San Diego and San Francisco.

The music industry are using the same old arguments that piracy affects the industry's ability to invest in new artists, and counterfeit discs often suffer from inferior quality. If you consider how far the indie label industry has grown that puts to rest the first silly argument that major labels support new artists. As for "quality", for the price you pay for an official CD, you would hope they would improve the mastering. Check any audiophile site to read the brickbats.

EDDIE IS BACK

Genuine Masters' Led Zeppelin "Listen To This Eddie - Collector's Edition" Hybrid DVD-Audio now has a solid release date of May 26.

STONES IN SHANGHAI

The Rolling Stones' Shanghai show comes to disc on Exile's "Shanghai Banging" 2CD from the April 8, 2006 gig at the Shanghai Grand Stage. The April 5, Nagoya show is seeing yet another release, this time from Silverdiscs and what could be a 3rd source for this concert.

HOW LONG WILL YOUR CD-Rs LAST?

A discussion broke out at a music website about the reliability of certain brands of blank CDs and DVDs. We think this opinion is worth a read:

"I will say that I have burned 100's of the 1-8X Made in Japan by Taiyo Yuden, Sony +R's and only had a handful of coasters. Which given the process of mass manufacturing is quite acceptable IMO.

However, since Sony has seen fit to introduce 1-16X the quality has dropped, if you are burning the Sony ID and not TY, It's a little hard to tell the difference in packaging, but it can be done.

I trade/giveaway using these very discs and have had no complaints of unplayability on either PC or standalones.

However, before I educated myself on media, a few years ago when I started I was using Ritek Ridata G03 - earlier this year I scanned them on a lark and discovered the quality was deteriorating. "Oooops"! Go and extract and reburn LOTS of discs.

So, in the end, do what you want, but if that cheep media works now, I will bet money that in a year the disc will be unplayable. Bummer. Take some time, go to cdfreaks website and read all about it.

Educating yourself on media with the help of 100's of people that are using the stuff and posting the results for you to peruse is the best thing you can do, and best of all it doesn't cost anything."

AMERICA'S BRAND

Seldom seen but out now are U.S. silver disc pressings of The Eagles' "Hotel California Tour 1977" DVD which features Houston Proshot footage and The Rolling Stones' Digital Broadcast from Copacabana Beach in Rio, "Music And Passion".

NICE ONE SIRENE

Sirene will continue their Pink Floyd Deluxe releases with "California Stockyard" 5CD + DVD. It will feature the very nice May 6th & 7th Anaheim audience recordings from 1977.

ANOTHER PAIR OF WINGS

Jumping on the Paul McCartney and Wings bandwagon this week is Beatles Master Works with their own 30th Anniversary title "Wings Over Toronto - Excavation Edition" 2CD, also from May 9, 1976.

WINTERLAND DAZE

The ever reliable Scorpio will issue two new titles, Jimi Hendrix "The Historic Winterland Arena Days" 6CD and Eric Clapton's "Back To 1967".

WHAT TIM BUCKLEY WANTS

Private collectors are being invited by the Tim Buckley Estate to help source for rare audio and video of the late singer-songwriter. The estate's minders claim they are aware of what's available in the record company vaults and the commercial bootlegs. Now "we need to know about what survives

and what has been cared for all of these years in private collections so that everything which should to be included in these restorations can be". The Buckley Estate hopes the remastered catalog will have the input of his fans and collectors specifically in these areas:

[1] Original 7-inch singles, whether or not they have their original sleeves, released in any country on Planet Earth.

[2] Surviving soundboard or broadcast or audience recordings not already circulating.

[3] The best possible copies of the source recordings that have already been used to originate the existing bootlegs and circulating recordings. So if you originated these, please get in touch.

[4] Surviving film or video not already known or circulating.

[5] Surviving interview recordings.

[6] Surviving contemporaneous concert handbills or news articles or other printed ephemera related to any performance.

[7] Any other Tim Buckley artifacts or memorabilia you have you think we should know about.

Some of the specific items the Estate most urgently seek to find are:

[A] A physical copy of the US Elektra single 45618 "Once Upon A Time" b/w "Lady Give Me Your Heart" or any acetate or reference or other copy of these two masters.

[B] A source or surviving copy of the 1968 Netherlands NCRV 'Twien' television broadcast of the Amsterdam Fantasio Club performance.

[C] A source or surviving copy of any recordings Tim made for the 1969 USA motion picture 'Changes'. Either formal recordings or production elements.

[D] Source or surviving recordings made at any venue known to have occasionally or routinely made recordings of their performers. For example, a complete performance from The Troubadour in Los Angeles or Cafe Au Go Go in New York City.

You can see from the above how "careful" the record company has been in keeping reference copies of their artist's works. This is what the Estate promises:

"The end result of this assessment and collection of surviving Tim Buckley recordings and ephemera will be lovingly created, comprehensively compiled and pristinely crafted restorations undertaken with the full authorization and cooperation of the Tim Buckley Estate." You can contact them at timbuckleyproject@gmail.com

You bet the real work of keeping a late artist's memory alive is best served by his die-hard fans. The same fans the dimwits in the recording industry are seeking to find and SUE.

ALERT: HENDRIX RADIO ONE HAS CD ROT

If you own the first Jimi Hendrix CD of his performances on BBC radio, please check your copy. The CD, Jimi Hendrix Radio One, was mostly manufactured at the PolyGram plant in the US [PDO]. It was released on RykoDisc.

A member of the Steve Hoffman Forum reported that he "pulled this one out to listen to today, after a long time on the shelf and it is riddled with pinholes in the aluminum."

Another member responded with a scarier tale: "A lot of PDO and WEA CDs made in the mid to late '90s should be examined if shelved for an extended period of time. Many of mine have rotted, but usually on the non-used portion of 99% of the discs I own."

"We've covered this before," said another "but there's nothing you can do to the discs except treat 'em well. It has to do with the laquer coating on the label side. Batches made in many manufacturing plants just go south at different extremes."

We checked our copy of Ryko's Jimi Hendrix Live At Winterland and yes there are pinholes but it did not affect play. Anyway, we backed up a copy.

WINGS ROCK SHOW

Coming from MisterClaudel is Paul McCartney & Wings' "Rock Show" 2CD from Toronto 1976. Probably yet another audience recording. Not many, you can count them on one hand, of these shows are any good.

TIME TO OPEN DOORS AGAIN

To celebrate The Doors 40th anniversary, yet another boxset is being prepared for yearend by Rhino. This time it will be a 12-disc boxset of six CDs and six DVD-As with 5.1 surround mixes by Bruce Botnick of the six studio albums. All the six CDs will for the first time contain bonus tracks which we hope will be outtakes. There will also be a vinyl boxed set of the first six albums and January 2007 will see two-CD versions of the albums released individually. This is perhaps the fifth time the Doors albums have been reissued in the CD format.

New this week from Sirene is Pink Floyd's "Best Of Tour '72" offering three versions of the Rainbow Theater performance of "Dark Side Of The Moon" from February '72. Could this be from the bittorrent version that circulated a few weeks ago?
