1960s

The Bootleg Series [2CD]. From DylanTree comes a fine compilation of pre-recording artist Dylan when he played in the living rooms of friends who owned tape recorders and reel-to-reel tape machines. This set contains the Nov 4 Carnegie Hall show from 1961, the Bonnie Beacher tapes from Dec 22, 1961, and the Leeds Demos from Feb 1962. Sound quality is excellent. Bob Dylan - Early Dylan [DylanTree 2CD] From DylanTree comes a fine compilation of pre-recording artist Dylan when he played in the living rooms of friends who owned tape recorders and reel-to-reel tape machines. This set contains the Nov 4 Carnegie Hall show from 1961, the Bonnie Beacher tapes from Dec 22, 1961, and the Leeds Demos from Feb 1962. Sound quality is excellent. This is reMastered version of the above. See notes below:

"This is a gorgeous remastering of the Dylantree Early Dylan set. As you may know, the dylantree version was flawed with "digital fuzz" in many places, particularly on the Beacher tapes sections. The fuzz is gone on the bprm. Other annoying extraneous noises have been removed, as well as overlong dead spaces between tracks. No EQ changes have been made to the original sound of the recordings. Levels have been normalized to match up the varying sources. The overall effect is to turn the Dylantree product into a two disc WOW! rather than a choppy collection of moldy old stuff. It's never sounded better."

"Steve Wilkison has done a wonderful job with this set. I consider it well worth getting, even if you have the original dylantree set. Here is an additional comment from Steve: 'I spent the better part of two days remastering the "Early Dylan" set because it literally contained well over 1,000 separate digital glitches'. Truly a labor of love."

Bob Dylan - BBC Studios 1965: New Tape [no label 1CD Torrent: 64182] live at BBC Studios London, England, June 1 1965. Tracks 1-6 First show broadcast June 26, 1965. Tracks 7-12 Second show broadcast June 19, 1965. "Recorded on 15th & 26th June 1965, in Hull, Yorkshire, U.K. using a KB domestic 1/4in. recorder with a BSR tape deck, running at a speed of 3.75ips via a line connection to Rediffusion wired system junction box. The recording is in Mono. This tape, while in great quality, came in the wrong speed and needed some work before it was listenable. Volume, Speed & pitch corrected in London, U.K. 10th - 12th September 2005 using CoolEdit Pro 2.0. Some additional remastering including fade-in, fade-outs at start & end of disc were done. Noise or hiss reduction has not been performed, in order to best preserve the atmosphere and feel of the original tape which this can sometimes take away." Ex broadcast mono.

Bob Dylan - A Dog Talks A Fish That Walks Vol 3 [Hollow Horn 2CD] Contains outtakes for Nashville Skyline, New Morning, Self-Portrait. Mostly this is the Dylan-Cash sessions with some officially released but hard-to-find tracks. This series has been condemned by Dylan's fanbase for not offering anything new. Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan & Allen Ginsberg - Holy Soul and Jelly Roll [Scouser Art 1CD] The Allen Ginsberg album recorded with Bob Dylan at Record Plant, New York, 17 & 20 November 1971. It was never released. Recently in 2004, the album was collected and put into a Rhino 4-CD box set of the same name. Ex SBD stereo.

Bob Dylan - Planet Waves Sessionology [no label 1CD] There are only two songs here that have not appeared officially - House Of The Rising Sun and an alternate take of Nobody 'Cept You. Otherwise this is the Planet Waves album plus two official outtakes from Bootleg Series and Biograph. Ex SBD stereo. Planet Waves was recorded over a few days in November 1973.

All I Ever Wanted To Do [2CD]. Here's an unbooted show [at least we think so] from Dylan's loudest tour in 1974 with the Band. This is the complete show from Jan 3, 1974 in Chicago. An audience recording with great ambience. There's a rare performance of Hero Blues that opens the show.

This is the afternoon and evening shows that were recorded and compiled to make the 2CD official release. VG to Ex- SBD/AUD stereo. Don't think this is taken from any official recording, some tracks are sourced from audience recordings.

Nineteen 74 Anthology [3CD]. Another DylanTree CD traded for free is this compilation of one fan's view of the best performances [not necessarily sound] from this classic tour. Taken from the best sounding sources, it is a collection of the electric set with The Band, the solo acoustic set and The Band's own set. The '74 tour was officially released as Before The Flood.

Bob Dylan - All of the Tracks: Complete Blood On The Tracks [no label 4CD] Fan compilation. CD1 sessions from New York Sept 16 1974. CD2 Sessions from Sept 19, 1974 in New York. CD3: Original Blood On The Tracks album sent to DJs and press. This was subsequently shelved and Dylan went back to rerecord the entire album. CD4: The Columbia Mastersound half-speed master vinyl album released in 1981. This is the only vinyl version that purportedly runs at the "correct" speed. Ex SBD stereo. Very rare.

This is the complete almost four hours show compiled by the DylanTree fraternity with sets by Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and Roger McGuinn. Fantastic atmosphere. This show has appeared in truncated form on other boots notably Flagging Down The Double E. VG - Ex AUD stereo. Unfortunately this copy is marred by digital clicks on many tracks. NOT FOR TRADE.

Rolling Thunder Revue (2CD New Orleans May 3 1976)

Bob Dylan - New Orleans 1976 [Yellow Cat 2CD Torrent: 52429] live at The Warehouse New Orleans, May 3 1976. "This is a beautiful soundboard recording of the entire Dylan portion (minus Isis) of the 1976-05-03 show at the Warehouse in New Orleans. Bobsboots.com says of this release, on the Yellow Cat label: "This is a great show that has been released several times in the past, always incomplete. This is the best version to date." A great recording, not marred by the oversaturation that exists on a lot of the RTR soundboards.

"This is one of those times where the filler is as good as the main show: there are three outstanding filler tracks included on this to round out disc 2: Hurricane, Oh Sister, and Simple Twist Of Fate, which are from a 1975-12-13 FM simulcast of the television show "The World of John Hammond." The fidelity on these is incredible, and Dylan puts in a typical outstanding mid-70s performance." Ex SBD stereo. Some think the speed needs fixing but not sure if too fast or too slow?

The Rundown Rehearsal Tapes [4CD]. This bootleg has also been treed for fans who couldn't or wouldn't buy bootlegs. Dylan was preparing to go on tour with Street Legal about to be released. The band play through his hits and clearly he is trying to accommodate the new players and girl chorus as well as to update his sound, hence fresh tempos like reggae . These sessions stretched from Dec 1977 to Apr 1978. Also included are three live recordings made from the tour at the end of 1978. Best sound quality of this hard-to-find sessions.

"For years, the Toronto '78 show has mainly been circulated in the form of the commercial bootleg I Was Young When I Left Home, which plays noticeably too fast. Just recently, however, as part of the outstanding Project '78 now underway, a new transfer from the master turned up, apparently obtained directly from the taper himself." VG+ AUD stereo.

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte [2CD]. A live bootleg taken from the Charlotte Coliseum show on Dec 10, 1978. This band had Elvis' bass player Jerry Sheff. The '78 shows signalled the start of the Neverending Tours. Yup, 60-year-old Bob Dylan is still playing live.

Bob Dylan - Farewell Bloomfield [Cuttlefish 2CD] live at Fox Warfield Theatre, Nov 15 1980 Slow Train Tour, includes Mike Bloomfield's final performance on two songs with Dylan. He died a few weeks later. Ex- SBD? mono.

Bob Dylan - Shot of Love Worktapes [no label 2CD] Dylan recorded plenty of songs before he compiled Shot of Love. Here are several songs and numerous instrumentals recorded March - May 1981. VG to EX SBD stereo.

Avignon [2CD]. A live bootleg taken from the Palace Des Sportes in Avignon, France on July 25, 1981. A complete show from his Slow Train [Christian] period. The track Slow Train ends abrubtly though. Excellent sound.

Bob Dylan - Outfidel Intakes: Power & Greed & Corruptible Seed [WWBD 2CD] outtakes derived from Rough Cuts and Outfidels bootlegs, then speed corrected and equalised to offer an alternate view of Infidels, Bob Dylan's best album from his late period. Ex SBD stereo. This is a very, wellmade fan compilation.

Bob Dylan - Complete Infidels Sessions [no label 7CD] fan compiled set taken from Surviving In The Ruthless World; Bob Dylan & Mark Knopfler - The Complete Sessions; Rough Cuts; work tapes, first Infidels outtakes tape and some unknown tapes. The story goes that Dylan recorded Infidels quickly and had a setlist. After a while, he changed his mind and removed some songs and reordered the setlist. Meanwhile, apparently for the first time, he went back in to dub in new vocal parts and changed some lyrics. Dylan had always recorded live in the studio before. Some rock writers have said the first recording of Infidels was more passionate, hence the interest in these sessions. Overall Ex sound quality.

If you want to collect the best shows from each year, there are Dylan fans out there who have every show Dylan ever played since the '70s and this is one of the recommended shows from 1997. Excellent sound.

Eating Caviar In A King-Sized Bed [2CD]. A bootleg from the Target Centre in Bob's hometown, Minneapolis, on Oct 23, 1998. Excellent soundboard recording. Dylan now has a habit of opening the show with an acoustic segment and there's some remarkable playing going on.

2000

Glasgow [2CD]. A bootleg from Dylan's acclaimed UK tour in 2000. This one was held on Sept 17, 2000 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. It's almost impossible to find soundboard recordings of his 2000 shows. But with the advance of recording technology, these audience recordings using superior mics and either DAT or minidisc recorders are in excellent shape. The live ambience and deep bass sounds are all perfectly captured. The tradeoff is a monoish sound.

Sheffield [2CD]. Five nights later on Sept 22, 2000 Dylan again gives the performance of his life at Sheffield Arena. Another excellent audience recording of this critically acclaimed tour.
