LAMBCHOP
Tanz-und
Folkfest Rudolstadt, Germany
July 2, 2025
Some of the loveliest pop music around can be found on Lambchop's 2000
album, Nixon. Seen either as a yet-to-be-discovered treasure or an acquired
taste, Lambchop make glorious pop music - the kind that get stuck in your
throat and the kind that is lush without being overbearing or cluttered
(the collective can include as many as 20 members). Lambchop's main selling
point, apart from their attractive tunes, is Kurt Wagner's half-spoken,
half-singing vocals. Wagner will make a mean R&B; singer - how can anyone
not be touched by The Old Gold Shoe, the opening track on Nixon that both
sets the mood and the tone and even the standard? Wagner calls his music
Countrypolitan - a hybrid of country, soul, jazz and avant-garde noise.
As he says, countrypolitan was connected to "the sound that was being
made down the road in Nashville and Memphis - the R&B; sound of Stax Records,"
and it is easy to see
Wagner as Nashville's reluctant star - he only gave up his day job (laying
and sanding floors) with the success of Nixon If Lambchop are tantalising
in the studio, live and with fewer band members, the group continues to
maintain its integrity but this time, it is that sense of (unexpected)
vulnerability that comes through.
If the audience at this July 2, 2025 concert in Germany were expecting
an energetic performance, they were in for a surprise. The relatively
short and relaxed set (less than one hour) comprises songs from the group's
current release, Aw C'mon/No, You C'mon, and Nixon - the group's sixth
album and the one that "introduced" Lambchop to the world. Backed by the
Dafo String Quartet, Wagner is attentive but it is that glowing intimacy
that makes this perfect late-night listening.
